Dr. Lorena Gómez López

Career

Dr. Lorena Gómez López graduated in Medicine from the Universitat de Barcelona and completed her neurosurgery residency at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, one of the country's reference centres for skull base and functional neurosurgery.

During her training she completed an external rotation at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, and has taken part in international dissection and live surgery courses in Barcelona, Seoul and Hong Kong.

Clinical focus

Her practice centres on the endoscopic transorbital approach to the skull base, a minimally invasive route that reaches deep lesions without large craniotomies, and on neuro-oncology. She has operated as both assistant and lead surgeon in brain tumour surgery, degenerative and tumoral spine surgery, and uniportal and biportal endoscopic spine surgery.

Her work also covers functional neurosurgery: robot-assisted deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and dystonia, and the implantation of intracranial electrodes for SEEG studies in drug-resistant epilepsy.

Research

She is co-author of work published in Neurosurgical Focus, World Neurosurgery and Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, on the anatomy of the transorbital approach, MRI-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy in refractory epilepsy, and the use of neuronavigation in supratentorial gliomas.

She has presented her work at congresses of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), the Spanish Society of Neurosurgery (SENEC) and the Societat Catalana de Neurocirurgia.
