Career
Dr. Joaquim Enseñat Nora is a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and Full Professor of Neurosurgery at the Universidad de Barcelona. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Reus) in 1996. After passing the MIR examination in 1997 (ranked 125th in his cohort), he completed his Neurosurgery specialist training at Hospital Clínic i Provincial de Barcelona.
In 2008 he was awarded a PhD by the Universidad de Barcelona with the grade of Excellent Cum Laude, with a thesis on the endoscopic transsphenoidal approach to sellar pathology. In 2011 he completed a fellowship in pituitary tumour surgery at Harvard University (Boston) and a Master's in Hospital Management at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
He was a Neurosurgery Specialist at Hospital Universitario Vall d'Hebron (2002-2006) and a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon in the Neurosurgery Department of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
Clinical approach
He has led pituitary tumour surgery since 2002, accumulating more than 700 procedures, and endoscopic and microscopic skull base surgery since 2005, with more than 500 procedures. As a member of the Neurovascular Unit at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona since 2007, he specialises in the surgical treatment of cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, with more than 130 procedures performed.
Research and teaching
Author and co-author of numerous scientific publications in national and international Neurosurgery journals, as well as chapters in leading reference textbooks of the speciality. He is a reviewer for the journal of the Sociedad Española de Neurocirugía and an accredited researcher on the doctoral programme in Medicine at the Universidad de Barcelona.
His research lines focus on endoscopic endonasal surgery for pituitary tumours, skull base surgery, endoscopic surgical anatomy, cerebrovascular pathology and the application of new imaging and surgical planning technologies. He is director of the EndoBarcelona World Congress, the Advanced Skull Base Course and the Endoscopic Transorbital Course, and a regular speaker at national and international congresses.
