## Symptoms of peripheral nerve injuries

Peripheral nerves can be affected by compression (entrapment) or by direct injury (trauma, laceration). Symptoms depend on the nerve involved but share a recognisable sensory-motor pattern.

### Carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve)

- **Tingling and numbness** in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger.
- **Nocturnal paraesthesias** that wake you up and force you to shake your hand.
- **Pain** that may radiate towards the forearm.
- **Loss of strength and dexterity**, with objects being dropped.
- **Thenar eminence atrophy** (base of the thumb) in advanced cases.

### Ulnar nerve entrapment (cubital tunnel)

- **Numbness of the little finger** and ulnar half of the ring finger.
- **Elbow pain** ("funny bone") that increases when bending it.
- **Weakness of the hand** when pinching or spreading the fingers.
- **Atrophy of the interosseous muscles** and, in advanced stages, "claw hand".

### Other nerve entrapments

- **Peroneal nerve entrapment** (fibular head): foot drop and difficulty lifting the toes.
- **Meralgia paraesthetica** (lateral cutaneous femoral nerve): burning and numbness on the outer thigh.
- **Tarsal tunnel syndrome**: pain and paraesthesias on the sole of the foot.

### Traumatic peripheral nerve injury

- **Sudden loss of sensation or strength** in the nerve territory following trauma or a wound.
- **Muscle paralysis** with inability to move a specific muscle group.
- **Neuropathic pain**, burning or electric, in the affected area.
- **Tinel's sign**: electric discharge when tapping over the nerve.

When to seek advice:
if symptoms persist for more than a few weeks, occur at night, involve loss of strength, visible muscle atrophy or persistent loss of sensation, an assessment is recommended.
Persistent atrophy and weakness indicate advanced compression
: early treatment prevents irreversible nerve damage.
